Whilst the world battles with corona virus, and with so many self-isolating not able to leave the house, it is important for us to look at different ways of staying active to protect our mental and physical health under this pandemic. In this article you will find a number of simple ways to stay physically active at home during these difficult unprecedented times.

GARDENING

If you are fortunate enough to have a garden, now is the time to maintain it and make it look pretty. Perfect April weather so no excuses accepted. It will keep your mind occupied and keep you fit. Please take extra care and try to avoid the use of power tools at this time of crisis, and be sure to wear the appropriate PPE, such as gardening gloves. Not into gardening? No problem, WALK, that’s right we need to get our 10,000 daily steps in to stay active. You don’t need a big garden to do this. Just repeat the same length over and over. If you are fortunate enough to have a big back garden, consider going for a jog or a brisk walk as a minimum. Better still, get out the bicycle and do a couple of lengths.

DIY

Get out the toolbox and crack on with all those maintenance and upkeep DIY jobs you’ve been putting off. You will not get this time and opportunity again. Please don’t attempt anything other than maintenance and upkeep jobs at this time to prevent further burden on the NHS. Lockdown regulations do not allow renovation and improvements, however, purchase of tools and supplies for maintenance and upkeep is deemed reasonable. Please be sure to take all the necessary safety precautions, wear the appropriate protective gear, and avoid the use of potentially dangerous power tools.

SPRING CLEAN

It has never been more important for us to keep our homes meticulously clean. Don’t forget to anti-bac key areas such as door handles, light switches, other switches, remote controls, taps, along with the usual surfaces. Also, everyday gadgets such as lap top keypad, mobile phone, tablet and so on. For bigger tasks, and if you’re feeling brave you can clean the windows inside and out (only attempt the outside for windows on the ground floor where you can easily and safely reach).

USE THE STAIRS

Walk up and down the stairs until you feel you’ve had a good workout. If you need something a little more demanding then move faster up and down the stairs, just please be careful not to fall !! The NHS are otherwise preoccupied right now ……

EXERCISE

Why not give the following workouts a try? There is no set time at which the following workouts take place. You have the flexibility to exercise when you want, so no excuses now, let’s get moving !!!

Full body MOT with HITT

Core workout for a trimmer waistline

Kettlebells for fat burning results

If the above routines are too advanced for you, there are other ways you can workout:
skipping rope

Skip – You will need a skipping rope, but this is quite a simple yet effective way to fit in a full body workout. To heat things up, try high intensity intervals, e.g. skip at speed for 20 seconds and slow skip for 60 seconds. Gradually increase the 20 second speed skipping as your performance improves. Alternately, have a competition with the family to see who can skip the most without stopping.

Hula hoop – One of the most fun ways to work on the core and trim that waistline. For added workout use a weighted hula hoop.

Dance to music – No one is watching so let yourself go and enjoy yourself !

PLAY TIME

That’s correct :-) - This is definitely one of the best opportunities you will ever have to play with the kids and give them quality parenting time. No eye spy please, instead opt for active play such as hide and seek. Your kids will love you for it and it will strengthen your bond with them. If you have a garden, be more adventurous and kick a football around.

PARTY GAMES

This will keep everyone entertained and is something the whole family can get involved in - Musical statues, musical bumps, twister, treasure hunt, stuck in the mud, to name but a few. Just make sure you have the winner’s prize to hand so there is a real incentive to take part.

We hope all the above ideas have been useful. Bye for now …...
